Donna Bonin is a true master of watercolor art. She has been listed twice among the top 60 Masters of Contemporary Art - in 2015 and in 2016 - by Art Tour International. Donna loves gardening, horses, pets, boats, traveling, and teaching.
Switching careers from a teacher to a full-time artist was inevitable and the transition was presumably an easy one owing to the fact that this self-taught multi-award-winning artist comes from a family of established art gurus; both her husband and father are award-winning artists as well. However, you can call it “force of habit”, but her passion for teaching is surely strong and it is evident through her return to class as an art instructor after she had officially retired from her 34 years professional teaching career while at Moira Secondary School, Belleville, Canada. She previously taught Physical Education, Art, and English.
Donna’s art is characterized by a sense of realism. The bold use of colors, light, and depth is exceptional. Donna uses impressionistic techniques with watercolors to render scenes and light falling on subjects from different directions. It is easy to tell from her artwork that the direction and quality of light illuminating on her subjects determine the subject's shadows, colors, mood, and values. Most of her artwork is inspired by her extensive travels and love for horses, pets, and nature (including gardening and the scenic Canadian wilderness). Her vivid rendering of these varied subjects (landscapes, buildings in towns, flowers, horses) on canvas is nothing short of spectacular. Donna explores different aspects of perspective to create 3-dimentional subjects occupying their individual space. However, some of her recent work has included abstract pieces with an unusual choice of collocated contrasting colors. She has exhibited her most current artwork in the Louvre (France), New York, Cannes, and Florence.
Additionally, Donna is known for her attention to details. Her artwork has great visual impact and you can almost feel the space created in her paintings… you can almost touch it. It takes months for Donna to approve of a finished painting and sometimes she leaves half-done paintings for months before adding the final enhancements. According to Donna, “The painting should tell the artist how to complete it when the time is right”. Moreover, Donna also seems convinced that the brand of your paint may somewhat affect the result of a painting. She however quickly adds that the artist’s prowess determines much of the outcome by how they mix the colors as well as other complementing elements.
Some of Donna’s acclaimed paintings include “Morning Scents”, “Running Free”, and “The Reclamation” among others. She enjoys working from her quiet garden or at the park, specifically Algonquin Provincial Park.
